Ilocos Norte’s rich history and heritage came to life as the Department of Tourism (DOT) led a journey through the Regional Historical Trail, immersing participants in the stories, architecture, and flavors that define the province’s cultural identity.
The Regional Historical Trail aims to deepen appreciation for Ilocano history while boosting heritage tourism.
The tour brought together tourism stakeholders, including tour guides, tourism officers, local government units, educators, and media representatives, offering them a firsthand experience of the province’s historical and cultural treasures.
Advocating patriotism through heritage tourism
For DOT Region I OIC-Regional Director Evangeline Dadat, the initiative goes beyond tourism—it’s about preserving national identity.
“We need to help our youth, our future, they have to know the history, where they come from. One has to really protect your own nation, let’s intensify our patriotism and one way of doing that is through our historical trail,” she said.
A highlight of the tour was St. Augustine Church, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site known for its stunning architecture. Participants marveled at its grandeur, with many expressing newfound appreciation for its historical significance.
For visitors like Evangeline Lomangaya from Manaoag, Pangasinan, the grandeur of Paoay Church is more than just a visual spectacle—it’s a gateway to discovering the rich history behind its architecture.
“Here at Paoay Church, it helped me know more about its history. Also, its baroque view and structures are very beautiful and unique,” she said.
Ena Domingo, regional tour guide trainee of the Department of Tourism (DOT), meanwhile stressed the importance of crafting engaging narratives to keep historical sites relevant.
“We need compelling storytelling when sharing history with tourists. A great narrative not only educates but also ensures the preservation of our cultural heritage,” she said.
Blending culture with culinary delights
Beyond historical landmarks, the tour also celebrated Ilocano flavors. A stop at Don’s Empanada introduced participants to Ilocos Norte’s iconic empanada—a crispy, flavorful delicacy that reflects the province’s rich culinary traditions.
Teresita Castillo, another visitor from Pangasinan, expressed her excitement.
“It’s my first time visiting Ilocos Norte, and I’ve learned so much about its rich history while savoring the delicious local cuisine,” she said.
Heritage tourism as a catalyst for growth
The familiarization tour in Ilocos Norte marked the final leg of DOT’s Regional Historical Trail from Feb. 5-7, which previously covered other provinces in the region.
By integrating cultural heritage and authentic local experiences, the initiative hopes to attract more tourists seeking meaningful and educational travel.
Tourism stakeholders remain optimistic that continued efforts in heritage tourism will drive local economic growth and strengthen Ilocano identity.
With its blend of history, architecture, and local flavors, the Regional Historical Trail stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Ilocos Norte—inviting visitors to rediscover and celebrate its cultural treasures. (AMB/CCMT/MTDA, PIA Ilocos Norte)
