DPWH aids motorists for New Year rush thru ‘Lakbay Alalay’

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) — To ensure smooth and safe travels during the New Year holiday rush, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Ilocos Sur District Engineering Offices (DEO) continue to implement the ‘Lakbay Alalay’ Motorist Assistance Program across key travel routes in the province.

The program, which initially ran from Dec. 24 to 26 and will resume from Dec. 31 to Jan. 2, 2025, operates daily from 8 AM to 5 PM, ensuring round-the-clock support during peak travel periods.

Personnel from the DPWH Ilocos Sur First and Second DEOs are deployed to assist motorists with towing, traffic management, and basic first aid services, reinforcing both convenience and safety on the road.

Equipped with essential medical supplies and heavy machinery, the team is prepared to handle both routine and emergency situations.

DPWH First DEO District Engineer Raynaldo Ablog said that motorists and travelers can approach the DPWH Ilocos Sur first DEO team stationed at Barangay Napo in Magsingal town, at the DPWH Compound in Bantay town, as well as along the Manila North Road (MNR) in Barangay Boquig, Bantay town.

“Since our team’s station in Magsingal town is spacious, we are also well-equipped with a dump truck and loader if needed. While our motorist assistance stations are only situated in the municipalities of Bantay and Magsingal, we assure the public that maintenance personnel are patrolling the area from Sinait town to Barangay Banaoang in Bantay town,” Ablog said.

Ablog also reminded motorists to be cautious and watch for road signs to prevent accidents and refrain from drinking and driving.

He added that a total of 15 motorists and travelers were assisted during the Christmas holiday, with no incidents reported in their area of responsibility.

Additionally, the DPWH Ilocos Sur second DEO team is prepared to assist travelers at key locations, including the MNR Tagudin Section along Tagudin-Cervantes Road, Barangay Calaoa-an in Candon City, and Barangay Quinarayan in Narvacan town.

Second DEO Maintenance Division Chief, Engr. Mark Anthony Tanagon highlighted their focus on both motorist safety and tourism navigation.

“In Candon City, there is an ongoing road work activity for the drainage canal. To help manage traffic, we encourage motorists who do not have business in the district to use the Heroes Bypass Road,” Tanagon added.

The DPWH also advised motorists to use the Heroes Bypass Road in Candon City to avoid traffic congestion caused by ongoing drainage roadwork.

Through Lakbay Alalay, the DPWH remains committed to ensuring safe and hassle-free journeys for both locals and visitors, emphasizing vigilance and care as key to accident-free travel. (CCMT/JMCQ, PIA Ilocos Sur)
