DPWH flood control project in Maasin City almost finished

MAASIN CITY (PIA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways – Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (DPWH-SLDEO) has fast-tracked completion of a flood control structure in Brgy. Bato 1, this city.

Bato 1 is an interior barangay near a meandering river that is prone to overflowing “surges and flooding whenever there are atmospheric changes and high-velocity wind” spawned by an inclement weather condition.

“The 500-linear meter flood control structure of stone masonry with reinforced concrete facing will shelter the residents of Bato 1 during such times of bad weather,” the building agency said in a statement.

Before the construction of the flood control project, excess water usually overflowed to homes of Bato 1 residents as their location is susceptible to flooding.

“This nearly completed flood mitigation structure will be an immense aid to the locals as this not only provides protection to the locals’ shelters, but also provides protection to their farm products,” District Engineer Manolo Rojas said.

DPWH-SLDEO embarked on a P505 million flood control structures in 2023, in which five (5) flood mitigation structures will be constructed along the critical sections of the province, in Maasin City, Limasawa, Macrohon, Malitbog and Padre Burgos, the DPWH-SLDEO report said.

“Flood control structures in Southern Leyte contribute to the expansion of the economy and can help develop rural areas. Additionally, these structures will safeguard the community, crops, farms, and other means of subsistence,” the report added. (LDL/MMP/PIA-Southern Leyte/With DPWH-SLSEO)
