DPWH holds groundbreaking for Panay Island biggest sports complex

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – – A groundbreaking ceremony already took place marking the start of the construction of the biggest sports complex in Panay Island, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways Region 6 (DPWH 6).

“This sports complex will be a game-changer for our community. It will provide students and faculty with top-tier sports amenities and has the potential to attract tourists and sports enthusiasts from across Panay Island,” said DPWH 6 Assistant Regional Director Jose Al V. Fruto who represented Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel during the ceremony.

The sports complex will be built in Northern Iloilo State University in the municipality of Sara in northern Iloilo. Undertaken by DPWH Iloilo 3rd District Engineering Office with the initial amount of ₱100 million, the project involves construction of a 1,403-square meter section of a multi-purpose building.

When completed, the sports complex will include a stadium and significant amenities within the 3,064-square meter lot area. It also includes development of a 400-meter track field and a 10,346-square meter football field, catering to a wide range of athletic events.

The facility is also expected to elevate sports and athletics in the region to new heights. It aims to become a hub for athletic training and competitions providing students, learners, and faculty members with unprecedented opportunities for sports activities.

OIC-District Engineer Robert S. Palmera said the project is a significant stride toward enhancing the province’s infrastructure and promoting a healthier, more active lifestyle among the local population.

“This project is a beacon of progress for NISU and the surrounding towns. It will foster renewed interest in sports among the youth, promote physical education, and serve as a venue for significant regional sports events,” said Palmera. (LAF/PIA6-Iloilo)
