With an altitude of 519 meters above sea level, the Department of Public Works and Highways Southern Mindoro District Engineering Office (DPWH-SMDEO), through its men and women of the Quality Assurance Section ascended in a seven-kilometer trek to serve IP community areas by sharing some solar street lights with 24/7 battery and solar-powered multiple USB-powered device chargers at Kilapnit High School and Sitio Hall for their computers, printers, and cellphones in Brgy. Panaytayan, Mansalay on December 11.

The IP communities in the area can be reached following the rough terrains that one can take to a panoramic view and people of great culture in the village in one of the Mangyan tribes, the Hanunuo.

District Engineer Annielyn E. Padullo said the task is to act on social responsibility to IPs of the province of Mindoro in addition to the mandate of their Department.

For this year, Padullo said the Quality Assurance Section was tasked of sensing the needs of IPs in an identified far-flung community.  They conceptualized ‘Share Some Lights’ for this undertaking during the recent launching of their agency’s Annual Plan of Activities for 2023 with the theme: “#A-Vocation-S3,” which means Sensing, Services, and Sustainability.

The installation of solar streetlights in this area of Mansalay is one public service of DPWH SMDEO. The lights in a far-flung area like this are necessities that would guide IPs to advancement, and a more convenient and safer life.

Likewise, part of this activity is the 18-day Campaign to End Violence against Women where staff from the Procurement Unit of DPWH communicated learning on Gender and Development, and discussed an equal and inclusive society with the tagline “We have Access.”

These programs of DPWH led by Padullo and Assistant District Engineer Emmanuel A. Manalaysay defined not only the district’s commitment to delivering the highest quality of roads and bridges that are safe for all road users but also its advocacy for promoting safety, security, and comfort at places isolated by lack of road infrastructures.
