BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (PIA) – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the temporary suspension of all ongoing road works along major highways in Nueva Vizcaya in anticipation of the increased volume of travelers for the Holy Week.
DPWH OIC Regional Director Mathias Malenab said the suspension covers the stretch of the Maharlika Highway from Sta. Fe to Diadi towns, a key route linking Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon to the Cagayan Valley Region.
The affected roads were opened to two-way traffic starting April 9, 2025 at 12 noon to accommodate the expected surge in vehicular movement during the religious observance.
“This decision was made to ensure unimpeded traffic flow and ease travel for motorists, particularly those heading to provinces in Region 2 to participate in Holy Week activities,” Malenab said.
The DPWH expects road congestion to peak from midweek through Easter Sunday as pilgrims, vacationers, and returning residents make their way through Nueva Vizcaya, which serves as a crucial gateway to the provinces of Quirino, Isabela, Cagayan, and Batanes.
Malenab said the temporary halt in construction will ensure road safety and help reduce commuters’ travel time through the province’s mountainous terrain.
“Opening all lanes to traffic, even temporarily, is necessary to minimize delays and make travel more convenient for the public,” he said, advising motorists to remain cautious while on the road.
He also said that signage and safety barriers will remain in place to guide drivers and ensure safety throughout the long weekend. (ALM/BME/PIA Nueva Vizcaya)
