CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) here has prepositioned 119,567 family food packs (FFPs) in different provinces, totaling P121.3 million. It has also allocated funds for emergency cash transfers as part of the agency’s disaster response and rehabilitation program.
During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas on June 11, DSWD-10 Regional Director Ramel F. Jamen shared that their mandate includes providing food packs as part of their disaster response. To ensure timely assistance, various provinces throughout the region are prepositioning family food packs.
“Prepositioning food packs will, hopefully, initially address hunger after a calamity,” Jamen said.
He explained that the decision to preposition food packs was based on past experiences with centralized storage in DSWD warehouses, which sometimes led to delays in distribution during calamities, especially when bridges were damaged or collapsed.
The food packs are distributed as follows: 51,244 FFPs in Bukidnon amounting to P51 million; Camiguin: 9,800 FFPs amounting to P10 million; Lanao del Norte: 39,016 FFPs amounting to P41.6 million; Misamis Occidental: 3,000 FFPs amounting to P3.3 million; and Misamis Oriental: 16,507 FFPs amounting to P15.3 million.
In addition to family food packs, the DSWD provides other forms of assistance as part of their disaster response program, including relief assistance through food and non-food items, which has benefited 83,916 families. A total of 25,238 families affected by shear lines received emergency cash transfers, while 6,886 families affected by Typhoon Paeng and shear lines received early recovery programs and services through cash-for-work.
DSWD-10 assures the public that they are doing their best to provide effective disaster response and serve those in need. (JAKA/PIA-10)
