DSWD-7 sends relief supplies for families affected by Mt. Kanlaon eruption

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 7 has sent today 900 non-food items (NFIs) for the families affected by Mt. Kanlaon eruption in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

The NFIs are composed of 300 family kits, 300 kitchen kits, and 200 sleeping kits.

The NFIs will be temporarily prepositioned in Guihulngan City in preparation for an augmentation response for the displaced and affected families of Canlaon City.

Yesterday, DSWD-7 sent 5,000 boxes of family food packs (FFPs) from the Visayas Disaster Resource Center in Mandaue City, Cebu.

These serve as additional stockpiles to preposition relief supplies at the Guihulngan Warehouse in Negros Oriental which is managed by DSWD.
Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas has ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in both private and public schools in the city.

A curfew is also imposed from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. as part of the public safety measures in the city.

A liquor ban is also now in effect in the city to minimize disruption in evacuation

Work in all government offices in the city are also suspended except for departments that are essential during disaster response.

Cardenas also ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks due to ash fall as the volcano’s magmatic eruption could bring harmful gasses and pose health risks to the people.

According to the Office of the Civil Defense Region 7 (OCD-7), Barangay Masulog in Canlaon City is the most affected area by the eruption, as it is located within the six-meter radius.

Around 50 families composed of 80 individuals have already been evacuated and are staying at the evacuation center.

The city government has identified five evacuation centers in the city, and an additional two evacuation centers for worst-case scenarios. (ZCL/RNR/PIA7)
