DSWD distributes relief assistance to typhoon Carina-affected families in Cagayan Valley

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 2 distributed relief assistance to families affected by typhoon Carina in Cagayan and Batanes provinces.

In its report to the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC), the department, in partnership with the local disaster risk reduction and management councils as well as law enforcement teams, distributed 295 family food packs, 44 family packs, 100 hygiene kits, and a family kit worth P643,769 to family who were determine severely affected, especially those who were flooded.

Regional Director Lucia Alan said they are still monitoring the affected municipalities to continue distributing relief assistance.

She said there’s a P4.35 million standby fund ready to be utilized if necessary, a stockpile of 54, 149 family food packs, 13, 758 non-food items aside from the 47, 616 family food packs, and 18, 917 non-food items prepositioned in the different local government units.

As of press time, RDRRMC Region 2 reported that there were already 587 families with 2,048 individuals affected in nine municipalities of the region.

“The flood has already receded. All evacuation centers are now closed. However, there are 28 stranded tourists in Batanes due to the cancellation of flights. They are staying in different homestays in Basco and Sabtang towns,” said Civil Defense Regional Director Leon DG. Rafael.

He also said that aside from the two towns of Batanes, the municipalities of Gonzaga, Peñablanca, Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes, Calayan, Lallo, and Santa Teresita were also affected.

Meanwhile, the National Irrigation Administration reported that no spillway gate of Magat Dam was opened. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
