DTI 6 supports sustainable, digital-driven initiatives for Western Visayas weavers

ILOILO CITY (PIA) — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Western Visayas recently expressed its full support for various innovative programs to empower the local weavers and designers in the region.

In a press release, DTI 6 Regional Director Rachel Nufable highlighted the importance of uplifting the region’s weaving industry while preserving its rich heritage during the recent Regenerative Philippines Innovation Workshop organized by tech startup Panublix Innovations Inc. and US-based Fibershed organization held at the University of the Philippines Visayas in Miag-ao, Iloilo Province.

“Our weaving traditions are integral to our cultural identity and livelihoods. However, we must adapt by embracing eco-friendly practices and market demands,” Nufable noted, citing the significance of sustainable and digitally-driven programs like the said undertaking.

Western Visayas was chosen as one of three priority areas to pilot Panublix’s digital platform connecting weavers to locally sourced materials, as well as regenerative fashion training.

Through this approach,it aims to empower the region’s weavers and designers, equipping them with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in a sustainable future.

The workshop has drawn participation from weaving artisan enterprises in Western Visayas.

Nufable further lauded the involvement of Fibershed, noting that the said engagement “highlights the significance and potential impact of this endeavor.”

She also added that by adopting eco-friendly and socially responsible practices, the weaving sector of the region can preserve cultural heritage while contributing to environmental sustainability.

To note, DTI 6, last year, launched “WEAVE Philippines,” the Regional Inclusive Innovation Center that links stakeholders to drive innovation, address gaps, and scale up regional weaving clusters.

“We believe that this workshop will serve as a catalyst for transformative change, enhancing skills and knowledge while positioning Western Visayas as a leader in regenerative fashion,” Nufable added.

Through the strong collaboration and support from both the public and private sectors, DTI 6 believed that the weaving artisans of Western Visayas are geared toward a “new era of innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.” (AAL/ED/PIA 6)
