BANGUED, Abra (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry confiscated and destroyed a total of P150,000 worth of sub-standard products in enforcement of the Philippine Standards Law.
DTI-Abra OIC Provincial Director Marvin Arcangel led the destruction of the uncertified products which included inner tubes, pneumatic tires, steel/tie wires, toilet bowls, and PVC electrical tapes.
As uncertified products pose a threat to the health and safety of consumers, DTI ensures that consumer safety remains their priority by continuously handling monitoring, inspection and enforcement activities.
Arcangel said that this will serve as reminder to business establishments and the consumers to be vigilant and investigative when buying products.
“We remind all consumers to exercise caution when buying by inspecting the proper labeling, PS(Philippine Standard Quality) and ICC (Import Commodity Clearance) marks of a product to ensure safety and quality,” he said.
DTI-Abra Consumer Protection Division Chief Marcos Rex Hall explained that the seized items were among the 111 listed products under the Product Mandatory Certification. These include plastic pipes, ceramic products, automotive related products, steel products, household appliances, consumer electronics and other consumer products.
Hall reported that eight establishments in the capital town of Bangued have been charged and penalized for selling or re-selling uncertified products
“Eight firms re-selling products that do not meet the technical regulations set forth by the Bureau of Philippine Standards were already charged and penalized,” he said.
DTI-Abra encourages consumers to report retailers, distributors or manufacturers who are selling non-conforming products through their phone number 09265213326 or visit their office located at Brgy. Calaba, Bangued. (JDP/CAGT-PIA CAR, Abra)
