DTI launches program to empower Siargao vegetable farmers

SURIGAO DEL NORTE (PIA) — The Department of Trade and Industry in Surigao del Norte (DTI-SDN) recently partnered with the SM Foundation, a non-government organization,  in the launching of the program on Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK)  in Siargao Island’s towns of San Benito and Sta. Monica,  all in the province of Surigao del Norte.

This initiative empowered the local farmers by enhancing their vegetable production capabilities, contributing to food security in the area. For 12 weekly sessions, the farmer beneficiaries will be trained on modern farming methods and technologies, including values formation, capability building and entrepreneurship.

The activity was highlighted with the participation of the 60 farmer-beneficiaries from barangays in Bongdo and Nuevo Campo in San Benito, while in Sta. Monica, it was also attended by another 60 farmer-beneficiaries from barangays of Libertad and Rizal.

DTI-SDN Director Arnold D. Faelnar said, “Siargao Island is a net importer of certain agricultural products, particularly vegetables, and that the KSK program aims to address food security concerns in the area.”

He added that through this initiative, DTI will enhance farmers’ entrepreneurial capabilities, legitimize their businesses, and provide access to essential market and support services.

Representatives from various agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture, Department of Science and Technology,  Department of Labor and Employment,  and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority extended their resources and services in the program, showcasing inter-agency collaboration to support local communities.

By partnering with key stakeholders and  SM Foundation, DTI-SDN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting programs that enhance livelihood and economic opportunities and aligning  with its mission to promote regional economic growth and development.
