TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DT) Region 2 is aiming to significantly expand its network of Consumer Welfare Assistance Centers (CWAC) across Cagayan Valley, building on the success of the 25 existing centers throughout the region.
Acting Assistant Regional Director Michael B. Paggabao highlighted the importance of CWACs as a key initiative of the department, designed to ensure that accessible and responsive support systems are in place for consumers.
“These centers assist individuals with concerns related to consumer rights and aim to promote greater consumer awareness,” he said.
Currently, Region 2 has 25 active CWACs, but DTI is setting an ambitious goal to add 10 centers by the end of this year.
Paggabao also revealed that DTI is pushing for the institutionalization of these centers via local ordinances in each local government.
The goal, he said, is to encourage LGUs to prioritize the establishment of CWACs and secure funding for their continuous operations and maintenance, thus ensuring the long-term sustainability of these vital consumer support systems.
“This initiative will also address the challenges some LGUs face, such as the lack of physical infrastructure and sufficient personnel to manage the centers effectively,” Paggabao explained.
One of the key takeaways from the DTI’s ongoing efforts is the significant impact of physical consumer assistance centers.
According to Paggabao, annual surveys indicate a 100 percent increase in consumer awareness in areas where these centers are physically present.
“This surge in awareness can also be attributed to continuous consumer engagement and education through the Consumer Network, a collaborative effort among various government agencies. These partnerships work to empower and educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities,” he added.
As DTI pushes forward with its expansion plans, Paggabao said the agency remains committed to enhancing consumer welfare and creating a stronger, more informed consumer base across Cagayan Valley. (MFJ/PIA Region 2)
