DTI trains cacao farmers to boost production

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Capiz conducted a five-day Cacao Post Harvest, Fermentation, and Drying Training at Cogon Hills Integrated Farm in Panitan town to boost the cacao production in the province. 

In partnership with the Capiz State University (CapSU)-Mambusao Satelite College and Burias Campus, Capiz Cacao Industry Council (CCIC) and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), 21 cacao farmers in the province trained on post harvest techniques, cacao bean grading, and cacao production.

Iloilo Science and Technology University instructor and agriculturist Francis Sendin gave the overview of the cacao industry, discussed cacao maturity and fermentation among cacao farmers in the province.

During the 5-day training, the participants were also immersed  in chocolate processing and advanced their topics on tablea and fine chocolate making on the third day and fourth days.

Rodelyn Betita and John Rey Lachica of the PCIC provided valuable insights into crop insurance coverage for high-value crops and farm owners to the 21 participants. 

Meanwhile, Dr. Rose Marie Conlu, CCIC president led the active participation of cacao farmers, farm owners, and stakeholders from CapSU Burias. 

The training concluded with a closing and awarding ceremony, where participants received recognition for acquiring new skills and insights into cacao production. (EAD-PLF/PIA Capiz)
