SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged the public to be wise and extra cautious when shopping for their needs and gifts this holiday season.
According to DTI Information Officer III Joyce Ann Sabado, it is always important for consumers to be mindful and wise on their purchases to get the best value of their money.
As Christmas and New Year celebrations are just around the corner, Sabado shared some consumer tips during an episode of the DTI Ilocos’ “Tungtungan” program held on Dec. 20.
Sabado advised consumers to take some time to shop around to compare the prices and brands of products before buying them.
“There may be available products with the same quality but a cheaper price,” Sabado said.
It is also vital to check on the item’s expiration date and if it possesses an accurate tag price.
Further, Sabado shared that consumers may save some money when buying non-perishable products in bulk, as some establishments offer discounts for such purchases.
“However, when buying in bulk, it is also vital to assess what you need or if you can really consume all the products before their expiration,” she said.
For a smoother and faster shopping spree, consumers are advised to make a menu plan or shopping list ahead of time to prevent buying on impulse.
Sticking to the menu plan or shopping list will save a consumer from excess expenses and dropping over the budget.
The public may also visit the Facebook pages of DTI for the price guide on Noche Buena and Media Noche items.
DTI also reminded the public to prioritize safety when buying Christmas lights and always look for safety markings like the Philippine Standard Mark or the Import Commodity Clearance sticker.
By following these tips, DTI aims to empower consumers to make informed decisions and enjoy a safe and budget-friendly holiday shopping experience. (AMB/CGCC, PIA Region 1)
