DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — The St. Paul University-Dumaguete (SPUD) has donated 1,154 square meters of lot to the City Government of Dumaguete to be used for the widening of Rovira Road in Barangay Bantayan.

Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said the city government will now be able to implement the seven-meter setback to be used in the widening of the Rovira Road to help decongest traffic up to Bantayan.

“I thanked the leadership of Sr. Mila Grace Silab who was open to this and was willing to help the city to decongest the traffic,” said Remollo.

According to Silab, the university decided to donate a significant portion of its land to help the city government address traffic congestion and improve the flow of vehicles and pedestrians in the area.

So kami mga Sisters natu sa St. Paul, very willing sab mi kaayo mohatag sa part sa yuta of the university kay (So we, the Sisters of St. Paul, are very willing to donate part of the lot of the university) we saw the need to improve the traffic concerns not only for the motorists but for our students,” said Silab.

Under the agreement, the city government will reconstruct a new fence along the new property line to preserve the security of the SPUD compound, retrofit the school’s guest house, and repair a portion of the Nursery Community Center affected by the relocation of the perimeter fence.

Remollo is hopeful that the owners of the other affected private lots in the area will also agree to donate a portion of their properties so that the setback will be completed from Rovira Road to the corner North National Highway, which is a major traffic chokepoint in the city.

Once the project is completed, the city government plans to install a traffic light system in the area for a more efficient flow of vehicles. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
