DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – The city government has started installing modern traffic lights to address the traffic problems in the city.

The city has energized and started the operation of the first nationally-funded traffic lights system on Feb. 18 at the junction of E-Rovira to Leopoldo Rovira East Drive in Barangay Bantayan.

This project is funded by the Department of Transportation through the Land Transportation Office Traffic Management Mentorship Program (TMMAP) Component B Traffic Signalization and Installation of Systems.

City Information Officer Designate Katherine Therese Aguilar said the initial installation is to educate the motorists and pedestrians while waiting for the local budget for the 20 other locations in the amount of P 22.9 million.

“This specific project involves the installation of four traffic signal controllers and signal heads, pedestrian light, traffic control panel and vehicle detection cameras that can detect both stationary and moving vehicles,” said Aguilar.

The budget for the locally-funded CCTV and Traffic Light Management System Project for the 20 other identified intersections is now being deliberated at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

This will cover the installation in five urban areas and five at the Metro Dumaguete Diversion across Dumaguete City.

This proposed CCTV and Traffic Lights System project for the 20 identified intersections will require 68 units of traffic lights, signal timer, traffic flow cameras that can detect vehicles and 20 signal controllers with fiber optic cables.

Aguilar said the proposed CCTV and Traffic lights system is in line with the efforts to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and promote public safety in the city.

“Motorists and pedestrians passing through the junction of E-Rovira to Leopoldo Rovira East Drive in Barangay Bantayan experienced for the first time how to navigate the roads following the start of the operations of the nationally funded prototype traffic lights system late this afternoon,” said Aguilar.

Enforcers were deployed to guide and instruct road users so they can follow the system designed to control and monitor the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to efficiently manage the traffic for smoother and safer travel of both motorists and pedestrians. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
