ECC empowers La Union workers with disabilities through livelihood assistance

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) Regional Extension Unit 1 recently provided hope and opportunity to La Union residents Eduardo Alcantara and Richard Hidalgo, who sustained work-related injuries.

Alcantara, a 34-year-old production staff from Agoo, lost his right thumb in a machine accident in November 2023.

Hidalgo, a 47-year-old seafarer from Naguilian, suffered a back injury from a fall onboard a ship in February 2023.

Despite their challenges, both men remained determined to support themselves and their families.

“The ECC facilitated the grant of livelihood assistance amounting to P20,000.00 each as part of our commitment to aiding workers affected by occupational hazards. This assistance does not end for financial only but also includes assistive devices like orthoses for our persons with work-related disabilities (PWRD) particular to Mr. Hidalgo,” ECC Regional Officer Dr. Angelo Ponciano said.

He said, “In addition, Mr. Hidalgo undergoes a free physical therapy session with our hospital partner.”

“This assistance from ECC is a lifeline for me and my family,” expressed Alcantara, who preferred to put up a sari-sari store.

“It gives me hope and a chance to rebuild my life despite the challenges I faced,” said Hidalgo, as he started his rice retail business in their area.

The ECC’s support underscores its mandate to provide comprehensive benefits and services to workers who suffer work-related injuries, illnesses, or disabilities.

Through various programs, including rehabilitation services and livelihood assistance, the ECC aims to empower affected workers to reintegrate into the workforce and regain economic stability.

“We are committed to assisting workers whose workplace accidents have impacted,” stated ECC Executive Director Atty. Kaima Via Velasquez.

“Our goal is to ensure that they receive the support they need to lead productive lives despite their disabilities,” Velasquez added.

The ECC encourages all eligible workers who have experienced work-related injuries or disabilities to avail themselves of the benefits and services provided.

These include sickness benefits, medical benefits, carer’s allowance, and rehabilitation services designed to facilitate their recovery and reintegration into society.
