Escalera de Paz y Amor: Isabela City’s vibrant pathway to peace

The Isabela City de Basilan actively participated in the annual observance of the Mindanao Week of Peace (MWOP) by revitalizing the important stairs that hold sentimental value for many Isabeleños.

The newly revitalized stairs called ‘Escalera de Paz y Amor’—The Path for Peace—which was originally constructed in the 1950s and is located at the heart of two barangays in Isabela City, Barangay Timpul and Barangay Seaside, was unveiled on December 6.

It represents the community’s commitment to creating a world without violence, echoing the spirit of solidarity called for by the MWOP 2023 theme.

Crafted by L’ Artiste Claret, skilled artists hailing from Claret College of Isabela headed by Jovienal Montano and Eunice San Diego, this ‘Escalera de Paz y Amor’ not only shows the path for peace but also stands as a testimony to the artistic prowess of Isabela City as a talented community.

These “memorable stairs” are adorned with colorful designs and translations of the word “peace” into various local languages. These stairs not only serve a functional purpose but also act as a canvas for artistic expression, conveying a message of unity and peace through the vibrant language of colors.

In addition to linguistic representation and providing safe space for all, ending discrimination and violence, these stairs are enriched with mural paintings that capture the diversity within Isabela City. These murals showcase different people, celebrating the unique tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and identities that contribute to the richness of the community. By visually representing this diversity, the mural paintings become a reflection of the inclusive spirit that is essential for fostering lasting peace.

On the other side of these stairs, hands are depicted—a universal symbol that transcends language and culture. These hands represent a shared creative endeavor, emphasizing the collective effort required to build and sustain peace. The diversity of hands signifies collaboration from various walks of life coming together with a common goal.

This artistic composition of memorable stairs, multilingual messages of peace, murals depicting diversity, and symbolic hands creates a visual narrative. It tells the story of a community committed to promoting understanding, collaboration, and unity as foundational values for peace in Isabela City.

Mindanao Week of Peace is being celebrated every last Thursday of November up to the first Wednesday of December every year through Proclamation Order No. 127, issued by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, to recognize the common aspirations of Mindanaoans to live in peace, unity, and harmony with each other regardless of their status in life, religion, or culture. This year’s theme is “A Call of MWOP 2023, Solidarity for. Action: A World Without Violence.” (RVC/EDT/NDR-PIA Basilan)
