EU election observers arrive in Davao del Norte

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte (PIA)- –  Members of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) visited the offices of Davao del Norte Provincial Police Office (DNPPO) and the Commission on Election (COMELEC) Davao del Norte last week before the official launch of the mission on April 25.

DNPPO briefed  the visiting members of the EU EOM regarding its security and peace-keeping measures institutionalized for the upcoming National and Local Elections (NLE) 2025.

During the visit in the afternoon of April 23  at the DNPPO headquarters in Tagum City, DNPPO Public Information Officer (PIO) Police Major (PMaj) Anjanette Tirador updated   the EU EOM visiting team on the proactive steps  that the DNPPO had undertaken to ensure safe, orderly, and fair electoral situation in Davao del Norte.

“We have intensified our security deployments and intelligence monitoring, and are closely coordinating with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other law enforcement agencies,” PMaj Tirador said in a media release.

“Public safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to providing voters with a peaceful space where they can freely exercise their right to vote,” Tirador  added. 

On the other hand, COMELEC Davao del Norte posted on  its social media page some photos of the visit of EU EOM Election Foreign Long Term observers, Anja Fiedler and Peter Bahchevanov on April 21. 

They had an audience with COMELEC Davao del Norte Provincial Election Supervisor IV, Atty. Norliza M. Mamukid.

The visit to Davao del Norte happened way ahead of the official launch of  the EU EOM done in a press conference on April 25 in Makati City, during which Chief Observer Marta Temido, a member of the European Parliament, said that the mission aims “to observe, assess, and support democratic standards independently and without interfering.” 

Based on reports of Philippine Information Agency NCR, the mission has a core team of 12 experts based in Manila and 72 long-term observers deployed in 36 teams across the country since April 16.

There will be additional 104 short-term observers who will join in early May, “bringing the total to approximately 200 observers from EU member states, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland.” (PIA/JMDA with Photos from Davao del Norte  Provincial Police Office and from COMELEC Davao del Norte)
