Ex-OFW gives Antique’s muscovado a sweet twist

Making the transition from being Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) to a successful entrepreneur came with both challenges and rewards.

For Aben Ortega, this path was shaped by dedication, innovation, and the support of key government agencies.

With a strong entrepreneurial mindset and a goal to enhance local products, he turned his experiences into opportunities, carving out a place in the muscovado sugar industry.

Before venturing into business, most of Aben’s friends and associates knew him as an OFW.

Upon returning to the Philippines, he initially considered starting a small-scale office and school supply business, along with equipment services.

To gain the necessary knowledge and skills, he sought support from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and became a Kapatid Mentor Me participant.

Through this program, he connected with local entrepreneurs and experimented with different business ideas, including t-shirt printing and souvenir item packaging.

His drive to enhance local products led him to pursue more opportunities for growth and development.

Through referrals and linkages, he discovered the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) iFWD PH program, an initiative designed to support returning OFWs in establishing technology-driven enterprises.

Under this program, participants receive training, mentorship, and funding assistance to build sustainable businesses.

In December 2022, with the help of iFWD PH, Aben founded Al Bin Packaging Services, which specializes in producing muscovado sugar in sachets under the brand “Handums.”

By improving its packaging and presentation, the brand quickly gained market appeal and became more competitive across various distribution channels.

For Aben, Handums is more than just a business—it represents his dreams, sacrifices, and deep dedication to his hometown.

Beyond promoting Antique’s rich agricultural heritage, his venture creates economic opportunities for local farmers and workers.

His innovative muscovado sachets have gained widespread recognition and are now available in pasalubong centers in San Jose, Antique, key tourism sites, hotels, and restaurants across the province.

Demand for Handums has also expanded beyond Antique, with orders coming in from all over the Philippines.

A major milestone for his business was securing a contract with a mall operating in Antique, further expanding his market reach.

The journey of Al Bin Packaging Services is proof that when passion meets innovation, great things can be achieved.

Looking ahead, Aben is determined to sustain his business, develop new packaging variants, and expand to a wider market both locally and internationally.

His story serves as an inspiration to fellow returning OFWs, proving that with the right support, training, and determination, they too can build thriving businesses and create a meaningful impact in their communities. (AGP/PSM/PIA Antique with reports from RJROrquejo of DOST VI- Antique)
