Families evacuate after heavy rains in Puerto Princesa

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA)—Some 151 families evacuated from eight barangays in Puerto Princesa City after houses submerged in flood due to persistent rains experienced on Sunday, February 9, brought by a shear line.

Assistant and Acting City Social Welfare Development Officer Remy Beltran said in the situation report that over 600 individuals were transferred to six active evacuation centers.

Evacuation operations are still ongoing for barangays of Bancao-Bancao and San Manuel.

The food assistance extended to evacuees by the City Social Welfare Development Office came from the barangay councils and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

“Lahat ng staff ay nasa evacuation centers—Naka-standby tayo 24 hours,” Beltran said.

The shear line caused the rains experienced in the city. It is the combination of the northeast monsoon, or amihan, and easterlies, triggered by a low-pressure area in the southwest of Palawan.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Puerto Princesa has reached 150 millimeters (mm) of rainfall during the peak of rains from 8 A.M. to 12 noon on Sunday.

It resulted in overflowing water in eight portions of city roads and two bridges.

About 10 responding agencies worked to rescue stranded residents submerged in knee-to-waist-deep waters.

Meanwhile, the city government announced work suspension for government offices and agencies, as well as classes at all levels, both private and public schools, on Monday, February 10. (RG/ PIA MIMAROPA- Palawan)
