Farming tools offer hope to former combatants in Basilan

SUMISIP, Basilan (PIA) – As a step toward reintegration and community rebuilding, 80 former violent extremists (FVEs) in Basilan received essential farming tools and seedlings during a distribution ceremony at the 32nd Infantry Battalion headquarters in Barangay Tumahubong, Sumisip, recently.

The initiative, organized by the 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade, in partnership with the 32nd Infantry Battalion (32IB), Rotary Club of Basilan and local government officials, aims to provide these individuals with the resources needed to cultivate sustainable livelihoods and foster self-sufficiency.

BGen. Alvin Luzon of 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade delivers his message to the Former Violent Extremists (FVEs) who received farming tools, empowering them to cultivate brighter future for themselves, their families and their community.

Brigadier General Alvin V. Luzon, commander of the 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade, emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for former combatants in his message.

“Peace is not just about laying down arms; it must be followed by opportunities for renewal. Through programs like this, we help former combatants rebuild their lives and contribute to a more progressive and peaceful Basilan,” he said.

He also expressed that the initiative aims not only to assist FVEs in rebuilding their lives but also to sustain peace and development in the province by offering viable economic opportunities.

For the recipients, the distribution of farming tools symbolizes more than just agricultural equipment; it represents hope and a fresh start after their past.

The farming tools and seedlings will enable the FVEs to grow crops, contributing to their families’ nutrition and local markets. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to healing communities affected by conflict and reducing the stigma associated with former combatants.

Former combatants believe that as they cultivate their land, they are not just growing crops but also sowing the seeds of hope and resilience within their communities. Equipped with farming tools and determination, they believe they are embracing a new chapter—one that promises healing and a potentially brighter future for themselves and their families.

Local leaders, including Sumisip Mayor Jul Adnan Hataman and Maluso Mayor Hanie Bud, attended the ceremony to express their support for the initiative. Shiela D.S. Pagarigan, president of the Rotary Club of Basilan, praised the program as a crucial step in empowering former combatants.
