Protecting children against Covid-19 starts in the family

The Bayanihan Bakunahan National Vaccination Days proved that families play a big role in an individual’s decision to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

This much was seen when teenagers and young adults swarmed vaccination sites all over the Calabarzon region waiting for their turn to get their Covid-19 shots.

“Gusto namin maging safe kapag nalabas, lalo na po ngayong may face-to-face classes na at kailangan daw ng bakuna,” Rachel* says of her motivation to get vaccinated.

[We want to be safe when going out, especially now that face-to-face classes will soon start.]

Instead of parents dragging their children to the vaccination sites, youngsters and their friends flock to these facilities to get inoculated.

These kids are the ones explaining to their parents that there is nothing to worry about in getting vaccinated.

“Sila yung gustong gustong magpabakuna kasi gusto na nilang bumalik sa face to face classes,” says Helen Pimentel, who admitted that her children pushed her to get vaccinated.

[It’s the kids who want to get vaccinated because they want to return to face to face classes.]

Instead of a worry-free day out with their friends, children aged 12 to 17 say they want to get vaccinated in preparation for their return to school for face to face classes.

By getting vaccinated Rachel felt more confident that she and her family will get better protection against Covid-19 and the dangers the disease poses for communities.

“Kailangan nating magpabakuna para ma-protekatahan tayo laban sa Covid at saka ‘yung ating pamilya.”

[We need to get vaccinated to protect our families and ourselves against Covid-19.]

“Para hindi na tayo mahirapan sa module at sa online class. Mas masaya po sa school!” she adds.

[We don’t have to struggle with our modules and online classes. [Classes] are more fun in school.]

More children in Calabarzon and other parts of the country  will hopefully get vaccinated against Covid-19 this year after the government procured an additional 15 million doses of United States-made Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines.
