SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — Promoting fire safety and preparedness is a collective responsibility, and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-La Union is leading the way with proactive measures to protect lives and property.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to raise awareness, strengthen emergency response, and foster a culture of fire prevention across the province.
Senior Superintendent Salud Apilado, BFP La Union Provincial Fire Marshal, highlighted the vital role of the community in fire safety.
“Fire prevention is not just the responsibility of firefighters—it starts in our homes and workplaces. Through awareness and preparedness, we can prevent fire incidents and save lives,” Apilado said.
Community vigilance and preparedness
In adherence to this call, barangays are being urged to strictly implement fire safety regulations and educate residents on identifying and reducing fire hazards.
Bacnotan Mayor Divina Fontanilla called for collective vigilance, emphasizing that fire prevention requires cooperation from every community member.
“A single fire can destroy lives and livelihoods. By working together, following safety guidelines, and being vigilant, we can protect our communities from devastating fires,” she said.
BFP-La Union is also increasing its presence in schools, workplaces, and public spaces by conducting fire drills, safety inspections, and educational seminars, equipping the public with knowledge on fire hazards, proper use of firefighting equipment, and emergency evacuation procedures.
Hands-on training
One initiative in the fire prevention campaign is the Barangay Fire Olympics — a program that tests and enhances the emergency response skills of community members.
Participants engage in friendly competitions simulating real-life fire incidents, including fire suppression techniques, search and rescue operations, and first-aid response.
Through this hands-on training, residents develop teamwork, quick decision-making, and a sense of responsibility during fire emergencies.
The event also provides practical experience in operating firefighting equipment and coordinating response efforts before professional firefighters arrive.
Strengthening partnerships
BFP-La Union is also expanding collaborations with private sector partners, including businesses, non-government organizations, and volunteer fire brigades.
Local industries handling flammable materials are encouraged to comply strictly with fire safety regulations.
Business owners are being urged to invest in fire prevention measures like installing alarms, maintaining accessible fire exits, and training employees in emergency response protocols.
With the combined efforts of government agencies, local leaders, businesses, and the public, La Union is moving closer to becoming a fire-resilient province — where every community member plays an active role in preventing fires and safeguarding lives and property. (CCMT/KJR, PIA La Union)
