Fires flare in Ilocos Norte amidst Typhoon Julian onslaught

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – Four fire incidents erupted in Ilocos Norte on Friday, Sept. 30, as Typhoon Julian (international name: Krathon) battered the province, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing residents.

The fires, attributed to electrical short circuits and unattended candles, caused significant damage to homes and businesses.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire outbreaks occurred in Vintar, Pagudpud, and two incidents in Bacarra.

The BFP reported that the fires were likely caused by electrical short circuits due to rainwater leaks and overloaded circuits.

In Vintar, a candle left unattended on a plastic cabinet ignited, causing a fire.

While no casualties were reported, one individual was injured in Vintar. The estimated damage in Pagudpud was valued at P1.44 million, while other residential and structural fire incidents are still under investigation.

Major Roxanne Parado, provincial fire marshal, urged household members to conduct thorough inspections of their homes, especially in areas prone to rainwater entry like outlets and switches. As a safety precaution, she advised residents to turn off the main power switch or lower the circuit breaker before checking to avoid electric shock.

“Avoid using electrical appliances during rain,” Parado said. “If possible, unplug appliances or use surge protectors to protect them from power surges and potential short circuits.”

The public is also urged to never leave candles unattended. Candles should be placed in a safe container that won’t easily tip over and monitored at all times.

The Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) implemented power shutdowns in some flooded areas to prevent electrical hazards such as electrocution and other damages.

Power restoration operations were suspended until 6:00 a.m. of October 1 or until further notice to prioritize personnel safety. However, linemen and frontline workers remained on duty for any request to shut off power upon the approval of Acting General Manager Perry Martinez. (AMB/MJTAB /PIA Ilocos Norte)
