MANILA, (PIA) — The Department of Health (DOH) reported a rise in firework-related injuries, with 43 cases recorded on Christmas Day.
The injuries, the DOH said, were documented from December 22 until 6 a.m. on December 25.
This year’s total marks a significant increase from the 28 injuries reported during the same period in 2023 and the 18 recorded in 2022.
According to the DOH, 37 of the 43 cases, or 86%, were attributed to illegal fireworks, particularly the use of “boga.”
The majority of those injured, totaling 34 cases, were individuals aged 19 years or younger.
In light of these incidents, the DOH has urged the public to avoid lighting fireworks and instead consider safer alternatives for celebration, such as using drums and horns. The department reiterated that selling firecrackers or fireworks to minors is illegal.
For emergencies, the DOH encourages the public to contact the National Emergency hotline at 911 or the DOH hotline at 1555. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
