Fisher folk groups in Roxas City get livelihood project grants

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA)—Subsistence fishermen associations get alternative livelihood project grants from the provincial government to tide their members up from poverty.

Fisherfolk groups in Barangays Barra, Libas, and Cogon in Roxas City received their water refilling stations and opened business operations right after the turnover ceremony of the livelihood project to each of the associations led by Gov. Fredenil Castro.

“We will do our best to sustain the project, and we thank Gov. Castro for the livelihood project,” said Libas Fisherfolk Association president Warlito Arroyo in Hiligaynon. The association has 270 members.

The other fisherfolk associations in Roxas City also thanked the governor for the assistance aimed at improving their socio-economic condition.

“Ginahingyo ko gid nga inyo amligan agud makita ko kon paano ang inyo pagpasanyog sa sini nga proyekto,” Gov. Castro said.

(I appeal that you take care and manage the project well so I can see how you succeeded and sustained the undertaking.)

In a separate interview, the governor said that the provincial government is attending to the needs of the coastal areas by organizing the fishermen and their families into a cooperative or association as qualification for a livelihood project grant.

“During bad weather and rough seas, they have no income from their livelihood; the provincial government has funded alternative livelihood projects for our fishermen,” the governor said.

Last August, the provincial government also turned over a fishing supply store and fishing boats with gears to two fisher folk associations in Barangay Dumulog, Roxas City.

Permits and necessary clearances are also being processed for a mini-gasoline station for Barangay Punta Cogon Small Fisherfolk Association, also in the city.

Moreover, coastal municipalities will also be given livelihood projects, the governor added. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
