Follow early warnings amid La Niña threat—Antique PDRRMO

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) of Antique has reminded residents to be alert and follow early warnings to minimize risks posed by the La Niña weather phenomenon.

In a radio interview, Antique PDRRMO chief Broderick Train warned Antiqueños about the potential danger once La Niña develops and brings in torrential rains across the province.

Train pointed out that following advisories from DRRM-concerned agencies is crucial to ensure the safety of families and the protection of properties.

He also called for greater coordination among local DRRM units from the barangay to the provincial level, stressing the need for constant communication and early preparation.

“Mas timprano, mas nami nga mag-convene ang aton mga local DRRM halin sa barangay, munisipyo, kag sa provincial government para maistoryahan kung ano pa ang dapat preparahan, especially kadya nga tag-ururan,” said Train.

(The earlier our local DRRM units—from the barangay, municipal, to the provincial government—convene, the better. This will allow them to discuss what needs to be prepared, especially during the rainy season.)

He recalled the impact of Habagat enhanced by other weather disturbances in the previous month which caused severe flooding across 16 municipalities in Antique, affecting over 40,000 families and resulting in over P133 million in damages to agriculture.

The official underscored the importance of keeping barangay DRRM offices open and always staffed to assist residents during calamities and emergencies.

In a Sept. 25 advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said there is a 71 percent chance of La Niña forming in September-October-November (SON) 2024 season.

This weather phenomenon is expected to persist until the first quarter of 2025. (AGP/YPA/BPS/PIA Antique)
