ILOILO CITY (PIA) — Newly-released persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) recently received livelihood inputs through the rice retailing projects of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 6.
This effort aims to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community.
Acting on the request of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for assistance to the former PDLs, Regional Director Lawyer Sixto Rodriguez, Jr. has directed the DOLE Iloilo Field Office to facilitate the formation of livelihood projects to help the former PDLs bring back their self-trust and confidence.
“This is social justice – giving more to those who have less and those who are in need,” said Rodriguez.
He pointed out that livelihood is an effective way to fight poverty.
“Poverty is the evil of society that pushes children to engage in child labor and has been the cause of social injustices and criminalities,” he added.
The projects have helped a beneficiary who was granted parole and three other former PDLs who have served the maximum service of their sentence – one at the Bureau of Corrections, and two at the BJMP dormitories.
“The assistance is part of the BJMP’s PDLs After-Care Program. Under the guidance of BJMP 6 Regional Director Jail Chief Supt. Simeon S. Dolojo, Jr., we are collaborating with DOLE and other agencies to help the PDLs for their livelihood and other assistance available,” said Jail Officer III Gretchen J. Demisana during the release of the livelihood inputs. (AAL/AGP/PIA 6 with reports from DOLE 6)
