Free Rides for Workers: A Labor Day Tribute

Labor Day, celebrated annually on May 1, marks a significant moment for Filipino workers as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announces a remarkable initiative: free rides on MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 from today until May 3.

Dubbed “Libreng Sakay,” the gesture is a tribute to the labor force that has consistently contributed to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

In conjunction with Labor Day celebrations, the President expressed the importance of recognizing the tireless efforts of workers who are the backbone of the economy.

“Nais kong sabihin sa lahat ng ating mga commuter ay inutos ko na para magbigay ng ating kaunting parangal sa ating mga manggagawa … kasama sa Labor Day Celebration ay maging libre ang sakay sa MRT-3, LRT-1 and 2,” President Marcos said in a video message.

He continued : ““Ito ay mula April 30 hanggang May 3. Ito ay bilang kaunting pagkilala sa sakripisyo at ang kontribusyon ng ating mga manggagawa hindi lamang sa ating ekonomiya kundi sa ating lipunan. Happy Labor Day!”

The four-day initiative—dubbed “Libreng Sakay” (Free Ride)—is designed not just as a means of transportation but as a symbol of gratitude for the daily dedication and sacrifices workers make.

In a country where public transportation is an essential lifeline for many, the free rides serve as a reminder of the collective strength of the labor force, especially in a post-pandemic landscape where many are trying to rebuild their livelihoods.

The Department of Transportation and railway operators are set to ensure the smooth implementation of the free rides initiative, with measures to accommodate the increased ridership during this period.

The initiative is also meant to alleviate the financial burdens on workers, many of whom are still grappling with the economic aftermath of COVID-19.

Alongside the free rides, the administration has introduced various support programs and wage reforms to foster inclusive economic growth.
Such initiatives stress the recognition that a thriving workforce is integral to national development, and promoting workers’ welfare enhances societal well-being.

While a temporary measure, the “Libreng Sakay” initiative serves as a stepping stone toward broader reforms aimed at improving workers’ lives and enhancing the dignity of labor in the Philippines.

As Filipinos celebrate the spirit of Labor Day, it is important to honor those who work tirelessly to sustain and uplift communities.

After all, every ride taken during these four days is not just a commute; it’s a tribute to the hardworking men and women who continue to drive the nation forward. PIA
