MANILA, (PIA) — Senator Win Gatchalian has called on local government units (LGUs) and law enforcement agencies to address the growing issue of love scams that have swindled numerous foreign nationals.
Gatchalian’s appeal follows a recent statement from the Australian Federal Police, which reported that approximately AUS$24 million has been lost to Philippine-based scammers who deceived love-struck Australians through various online dating apps. The senator announced plans to file a resolution addressing the issue.
“It is embarrassing that fellow Filipinos are victimizing foreigners. They tarnish the good image of Filipinos abroad, especially our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who are known for their reliability and trustworthiness. Such incidents can negatively affect their future job opportunities overseas,” Gatchalian said.
He noted that some love scam operations might be remnants of illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) that previously operated in the country.
Gatchalian urged agencies like the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to collaborate with international law enforcement to eliminate these criminal activities in the Philippines.
He also expressed concern that scammers might be targeting Filipinos, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and education regarding online scams. Some individuals may have already fallen victim to these scams but have not reported it due to fear of societal judgment, he added.
“Scammers typically profile their targets and exploit the vulnerabilities of potential victims. Those who are isolated, seeking companionship, or lacking online safety awareness are particularly susceptible to love scams,” Gatchalian explained.
He insisted that appropriate criminal charges should be filed against love scam perpetrators to deter others from engaging in similar fraudulent activities.
As chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, Gatchalian has been advocating for the eradication of all forms of scamming in the country, including investment and love scams. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
