Gen Z voters poised to influence outcome of 2025 midterm elections

QUEZON CITY (PIA) – As the Philippines heads toward the highly anticipated midterm elections results, experts predict that Generation Z voters could play a crucial role in shaping the outcome.

In an interview with Hatol ng Bayan 2025, University of Santo Tomas Political Science Department Chair Professor Dennis Coronacion emphasized the significant impact that Gen Z voters could have on the results of the midterm elections.

Generation Z, composed of young individuals aged 18 to 30, accounts for nearly 20 million registered voters in the Philippines.

“Gen Z’s votes will have a major impact. If I’m not mistaken, based on COMELEC data, they are either slightly over 20 million or close to that figure. With a total of 68 million registered voters, this fraction is substantial,” Coronacion stated.

He further explained that Gen Z voters tend to have an idealistic mindset when choosing candidates, mainly influenced by the information they acquire online.

“They are highly discerning when selecting candidates, which sets them apart from older age groups,” Coronacion added.

However, as social media continues to be a major source of political information for young voters, Coronacion urged them to remain vigilant against misinformation and the proliferation of fake news, which could affect their voting decisions.

With the midterm elections nearing its end, analysts and political observers alike are closely monitoring how the Gen Z vote will shape the country’s political landscape—potentially serving as a game changer in determining the outcome of the polls. (JVD/PIA-NCR)
