BAGUIO CITY (PIA) –The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Baguio urged the public to have the electrical systems of their houses or buildings checked to prevent potential fire hazards.

BFP Baguio Public Information Officer SFO1 Lloyd Ashley Furigay said that they recorded an increase in fire incidents in the city in 2024 with 96 cases from 79 cases in 2023. Most of the fire incidents are structural with 57 cases followed by grass fire with 12, forest fire with 11, vehicular fire with 7, rubbish fire with 2, and electrical post with 1.

Furigay said that the major causes of structural fires include electrical ignition caused by electrical arcing, irresponsible disposal of cigarette butts or lighted objects, and loose connection of wires.

He explained that loose wires may cause an imbalance in the flow of electricity and might ignite a fire.

Ugaliin po nating ipa-check ‘yung electrical system ng bahay natin para ma-check po ng licensed electrician,” Furigay reminded.

[Let us make it a habit  to have the electrical system in our homes checked by licensed electrician.]

Furigay also encouraged the public to grab the opportunity and participate in the fire safety seminars that they conduct in the barangays.

He added that fire safety is a responsibility of everyone.

Lagi nating tandaan na ang fire safety is nagsisimula po sa family natin. Ugaliin nating turuan ‘yung mga kasamahan natin sa bahay, kung tayo po ay mga parents, turuan po natin ‘yung mga anak natin.”

[Let us always remember that fire safety starts in the family. Let us  teach our household members. If we are parents, let us teach our children.]

The BFP Baguio also continues to conduct information dissemination campaigns such as posting fire safety tips on their social media accounts and distributing flyers.

Furigay said that they are also strengthening the Community Fire Auxiliary Groups in every barangay. They plan to expand the training to other barangays this year.

He also appealed to the public to report any fire incident or emergency  to 911 for faster response. (JDP/DEG-PIA CAR)
