LANAO DEL NORTE (PIA) — “Work smart, not hard, and surround yourself with the right people.” These words guide Regine Mae S. Rizon, founder of Laregina Coconut Products Manufacturing.

From a young age, Rizon wanted to become a “tindera” or vendor. Growing up, she observed her mother’s business efforts and learned early lessons in operations and work ethic, shaping her interest in entrepreneurship.

She later identified a business opportunity that combined coconut farming with hair and skin care. She saw a market reliant on chemical-based products that often failed to address common issues such as hair fall, dandruff, and dryness. At the same time, she noted the limited earnings of coconut farmers despite the value of their harvests.

To bridge this gap, she turned to traditional Filipino hair care using coconut oil. Rich in nutrients, coconut oil supports hair health, strengthens strands, and hydrates the scalp.

However, like any business, challenges arose. One challenge was consumer hesitation due to the natural scent of coconut oil. To address this, her company added essential oils to its formulations, neutralizing the scent while retaining the oil’s benefits.

When asked about working in a male-dominated industry, Rizon said, “I don’t see men as a challenge, but rather an opportunity. It’s not about who dominated the industry; it’s about recognizing and addressing the needs of all consumers, regardless of gender.”

Through the Department of Trade and Industry’s Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP), she gained insights and promoted her products at trade fairs. The DTI helped her connect with networks, secure partnerships, and explore market opportunities.

She also joined the DTI’s Kapatid Mentor ME Program, receiving personalized mentorship.

“With the DTI’s help, I’ve been able to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and build a successful business,” she said.

Laregina Coconut Products Manufacturing is now focused on nationwide distribution through supermarkets. The company is also transitioning away from single-use plastics by replacing sachet packaging with eco-friendly alternatives.

As her business grows in Lanao del Norte, Rizon encourages others to stay focused, make thoughtful decisions, and work hard.

To women entering entrepreneurship or male-dominated industries, her message is clear: attend trainings, invest in personal development, and continue improving. “There is always room for progress,” she said. (DTI-10/PIA-10)
