LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA) — In continuing efforts to strengthen collaboration among government offices in bringing information down to the grassroots, 40 information officers (IOs) and IO-designate from the different local government units and national agencies in the province recently gathered to discuss the reorganization of the Ifugao Communicators and Networkers (ICOMMNET) and plan its activities for 2024.
Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Cordillera Regional Head Helen Tibaldo welcomed the participants through an audio-visual presentation, where she emphasized the critical nature of the gathering. She noted that this is a time to share experiences and insights on the rapidly evolving communication landscape.
The shift from traditional gatekeeping to the digital era has revolutionized how people interact and disseminate information. She also highlighted that the rise of social media has introduced new challenges in distinguishing positive from negative impacts.
Tibaldo urged participants to navigate the multi-platform landscape with agility, adapt to this evolving paradigm, and master multi-tasking, which are essential skills for government communicators to effectively engage with diverse audiences.
Information Center Manager Jamie Malingan of PIA-Abra gave a lecture on Risk Communication via Zoom. She emphasized that to effectively communicate risks, it is the import to deliver messages or information in a simple and clear manner to ensure that it does not lead to misunderstandings or create confusion resulting in increased anxiety or fear.
The participants were also oriented on the basics of disaster risk reduction and management by Engr. Arnold Bacnog of the Provincial DRRM Office.
Meanwhile, the group elected the new set of officers, namely; President-Rosemarie P. Lindawan (PLGU); vice president for national agencies: District 1- Sheryl Shane Velarde (DILG) and District 2- Jasmine Grace Pomilban (Philhealth); VP for LGUs:District 1- Brenda Sawad (LGU-Lamut) and District 2- Jhayselda M. Napudo (LGU- Mayoyao); secretary-Shahani A. Ballatong (DENR), treasurer- Zandria D. Buhulon (Landbank), and public relations officer- Dyan Lilet D. Tomas (IFSU). There are also vice presidents for the uniformed bureaus.
The participants discussed activities they will undertake which include holding a “kapihan” and a training session. The ICOMMNET was organized by PIA-Ifugao will the aim that government communicators collaborate in bring government information to wider audience towards a more aware, enlightened and empowered citizenry.
