MISAMIS ORIENTAL (PIA) – Green Planet Renewable Energy Corp (GPREC) partnered with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-10 to refurbish a pyrolysis plant that converts used tires and plastic into industrial fuel oil, offering a sustainable solution to Misamis Oriental’s waste problem.
On January 10, 2025, GPREC inaugurated the DOST-funded plant in Naawan, Misamis Oriental. This unique facility highlights the potential of pyrolysis technology, providing an eco-friendly waste management solution that supports DOST’s commitment to a circular economy.
The pyrolysis-produced fuel oil is a cost-effective alternative for generating heat and steam in industrial boilers and furnaces.
“We believe that with DOST’s leadership, this is only the beginning. We are confident DOST will continue using science and technology to tackle national challenges,” said Fernando M. Sebial, GPREC’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasizing DOST’s key role in establishing the plant.
Processing used tires and plastic waste into fuel is just the first phase of GPREC’s operations. The company plans to expand into processing various waste types for local government units (LGUs) and develop a “Garbage to Power” facility.
In 2024, GPREC received assistance from DOST-10 through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) to enhance the plant’s capacity. The upgrades increased its production capacity by 33.33 percent, allowing it to serve more manufacturing plants seeking affordable alternative fuel.
Beyond economic benefits, this project’s long-term impact focuses on sustainable waste management solutions for Northern Mindanao.
The project reinforces DOST’s commitment to promoting a circular economy and sustainability, echoing the messages of the 2024 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week from November 27 to December 1, 2024.
