CAGAYAN DE ORO (PIA) – The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines (DSAPI), in partnership with SM Cares and other organizations, hosted Happy Walk 2025 at SM Downtown Premiere, March 23, to raise awareness about Down syndrome and promote inclusivity.
During the event, DSAPI Northern Mindanao Parent Support Group head Honey Hernan addressed fellow parents, emphasizing their role in supporting their children’s development. “Ang inyong mga anak naay mga kaugalingon nga journey, naa ra sa ato mga parents unsaon nato pag discover, pag support, para ilang ma reach ilang full potential,” Hernan said.
(Your children have their own journeys. It is up to us, as parents, how we help them discover, support, and reach their full potential.)
Hernan introduced the “321 and Beyond” campaign, explaining that “321” refers to the three copies of Chromosome 21 in individuals with Down syndrome, while “Beyond” encourages parents to explore their children’s potential beyond the condition.
“Let us do more than accept the diagnosis of Down syndrome. Dili lang ta taman sa pag accept nga naa na siyay (let us do more than just accept the diagnosis of) Down syndrome, let’s embrace the beyond,” Hernan affirmed, stressing that individuals with Down syndrome can live empowered and fulfilling lives.
Representatives from SM Cares also supported the event.
“This event in partnership with DSAPI is a testament to our shared commitment to inclusivity and creates places where everyone feels loved, valued, and supported,” said assistant mall manager Paolo Jesus Zuleta.
A variety of activities were provided for the children, including face painting by JCI Macajalar 24k, Kids’ Yoga, food, a raffle draw, and the main event—the Happy Walk parade.
Parent Jims Virgil Cortes shared his appreciation for the event. He noted that it not only raises awareness but also helps parents with children diagnosed with Down syndrome gain valuable information.
Cortes explained that the challenge lies in understanding how to care for their children and help them realize their potential, as there is still limited information available on the syndrome.
The Happy Walk has been a nationwide movement for over two decades, celebrated in various locations, including SM City Cebu, SM City Bacolod, and SM CDO Downtown Premiere this year. (HSGA/PIA-10)
