MANILA, (PIA) — The House of Representatives has approved on second reading House Bill (HB) No. 10841, aimed at modernizing and strengthening the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) through comprehensive policy and organizational reforms.

In a voice vote, lawmakers expressed their support for the measure, which focuses on enhancing the agency’s assets and facilities amid ongoing maritime disputes with China.

HB 10841 proposes an annual allocation of P5 billion to the PCG to further its modernization plans. The bill also seeks to secure loans and grants from both local and foreign sources to support these efforts.

During his sponsorship speech, Deputy Majority Leader and Party-list Representative Erwin T. Tulfo emphasized the importance of the bill in light of rising challenges in safeguarding the nation’s maritime territory.

This bill ensures that the PCG is equipped with the tools and resources to fulfill its mandate effectively,” he said.

Tulfo added that with modernized assets, improved personnel training, and enhanced funding mechanisms, the PCG will be better prepared to respond swiftly to emerging threats.

By empowering the PCG, this legislation reinforces our commitment to assert our sovereignty and protect our maritime waters, ensuring the safety of our fishermen and coastal communities,” he concluded. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
