Hybrid rice technology highlighted in Cagayan farmers day

SOLANA, Cagayan (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Southern Cagayan Research Center, promoted hybrid rice technologies to improve rice production during a Farmers’ Field Day in Solana, Cagayan.

Hector Tabbun, chief of the Research Division, said the project aimed to introduce and promote advanced rice cultivation technologies.

He explained that the technology includes the use of hybrid seeds at 15 kilograms per hectare, Bio-N fertilizer at 6 packs per hectare, NPK fertilization based on soil analysis, organic fertilizers at 20 bags per hectare, and soil ameliorants like carrageenan at 3 liters per hectare.

Tabbun also mentioned that farmers were introduced to Trichoderma harzianum, or Compost Fungus Activator (CFA), to improve rice straw decomposition.

“Over a hundred farmers, including members of the North West Solana Farmers Irrigators Association, participated in the hands-on event designed to boost productivity and enhance agricultural practices,” he said.

Solana Vice Mayor Maynard Z. Carag acknowledged the challenges of farming, calling it a “gamble,” but emphasized the importance of adapting to new technologies.

John Gil Doca, Barangay Captain of Bangag, encouraged farmers to support the new technologies for better farming outcomes.

“Let us give important and support to this technology as this will improve our yields and productions,” he said.

The officials believe that the successful event highlighted the potential for hybrid rice varieties to increase yields and foster sustainable rice farming in the region. (OTB/PA region 2/ with reports from DA 2)
