LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA) — Disaster risk reduction risk management officers (DRRMOs) and planners of the local government units and uniformed personnel were trained on the GeoRiskPH Platform to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the various web and mobile applications to mitigate hazards and exposure to other risks.
The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) conducted the two-day event.
Niko Mercado of DOST-PHIVOLCS explained that the GeoRiskPH initiative is a multi-agency project of the government aimed to establish a central data base of hazard and risk information for easy access and sharing to all Filipinos.
“The GeoRiskPH consists of digital applications that can be accessed by anyone or LGUs in conducting hazard assessment using their computers and mobile phones. These applications will ensure an improved disaster risk reduction management initiative,” he said.
The GeoMapperPH is designed to facilitate the easy collection and updating of hazards, exposure, vulnerability, and coping capacity data to support the decision-making process before, during, and after disasters.
GeoAnalyticsPH is an application that can help generate maps and analytics using hazards, exposure, and location data while HazardHunterPH is a multi-hazard assessment tool that contains climate information, typhoon tracks, near-real time earthquake monitoring, among other information.
PlanSmart is an automated planning tool for disaster rehabilitation and recovery.
Mercado shared that the training equips the DRRM officers and planners the needed knowledge and skills on how to use the various applications on their projects and planning in their respective LGUs or municipality.
Christopher Costales of the Banaue Municipal Planning and Development Office said that the GeoRisk PH platform is a great help in the planning process of the municipal government due to availability of the four system like the GeoMapperPH, GeoAnalyticsPH, HazardHunterPH, and PlanSmart.
“These components are very useful especially in making the comprehensive land use plan, mapping plans and geo-hazard plan of the municipality,” he stated.
Noela Opigan of LGU Tinoc also thanked the DOST-PHIVOLCS for conducting the two-day training that enabled her to determine the areas in the municipality that vulnerable to landslide and flooding. (JDP/MBL-PIA CAR, Ifugao)
