LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA) — The provincial government of Ifugao recently awarded a plaque of commendation to a student of Ifugao State University (IFSU) who won a gold medal in an international virtual competition.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan led by Vice Governor Glenn D. Prudenciano, presented the plaque of commendation to Christine Faith Gano during their regular on October 1, 2024.
Gano, a native of Hapao, Hungduan, topped the 2023 ASEAN Virtual Student Opinion Writing Competition (AViSOC) winning over 749 participating students from nine ASEAN countries.
AViSOC is the largest student opinion writing competition in Asia, challenging university students across the region to express their views on global issues through articles or posters.
Gano’s winning piece titled “AI or People,” explores the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, job displacement, diminishing critical thinking, emotional intelligence, security risks, and the dangers of misinformation.
Gano, currently a third-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student at IFSU’s Main Campus in Lamut, highlighted the disruptive potential of AI in the workforce and media, emphasizing how advancements in machine learning and deep learning are reshaping industries.
“Artificial intelligence is useful to people but if artificial intelligence replaces people, then it is a big no for this world. We always innovate for people’s development, not to develop replacement for people,” Gano wrote in her opinion piece.
She also emphasized that students like her are studying diligently to secure better opportunities, not to be replaced by AI.
“I still want to work in a world where humans are needed because of their intelligence, skills, and personal touch,” Gano stated in her award-winning essay.
Artificial Intelligence or AI refers to the ability of machines or computers to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as solving problems, learning from experience, or understanding language.
For example, AI powers virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa and helps machines like self-driving cars operate. It is widely used in various fields to make tasks easier and more efficient. (JDP/FBR-PIA Ifugao, CAR)
