Iligan gears up for 2025 elections with unity walk, peace covenant signing

ILIGAN CITY (PIA) — In preparation for the upcoming 2025 national and local elections, a Unity Walk, Interfaith Prayer Rally, and the signing of the Peace Covenant of Political Candidates, along with the signing of the Integrity Pledge, will be held, February 8.

The event aims to foster a peaceful and orderly election process and to reaffirm the commitment of all involved parties to fair and responsible conduct during the electoral period.

This will bring together 61 electoral candidates, their supporters, and various stakeholders. The activities will begin with an assembly at 5:00 a.m., followed by the walk at 6:00 a.m., and culminate with a program at the City Public Plaza at 7:00 a.m. All participants are asked to wear white.

The assembly points and routes for the political groups are as follows: Solid 15 will start at Plaza Alemania, proceed to Manuel Quezon Avenue, pass by BDO, and end at the Public Plaza. United Iligan will begin at KFC, move toward the Post Office, continue along Manuel Quezon Avenue, pass by BDO, and conclude at the Public Plaza. Abante Iligan will commence at ICNHS, follow Manuel Quezon Avenue, pass by BDO, and reach the Public Plaza.

Kargador will gather at Coop Fuel on Sabayle Street, proceed to PhilAm Life, continue along Manuel Quezon Avenue, pass by BDO, and finish at the Public Plaza. Independents will assemble at the GSIS Office, take Lluch Street, head to Manuel Quezon Avenue, pass by BDO, and complete their route at the Public Plaza.

The event is spearheaded by the Secure, Accurate, and Fair Elections (SAFE) 2025 Core Group, which includes key agencies such as the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, Philippine Information Agency, and the Interfaith Group.

During the coordination meeting held for the event, COMELEC Election Officer for Iligan Anna Liza Barredo emphasized the core group’s commitment to neutrality in preparation for the 2025 national and local elections. 

“We are here to be neutral in our activities, ang atong purpose nga mahimong successful ug orderly ang election (our purpose is to ensure the success and order of the election),” she said. 

Barredo also acknowledged that during elections, misinformation and negative comments are common, but the core group is dedicated to overcoming these challenges. She also highlighted the importance of cooperation with deputized agencies and other stakeholders to achieve a peaceful and organized election.

Meanwhile, Iligan City Police Office Acting Director PCol. Jerry Tambis reassured the public that, as of now, there are no areas of concern in any of the 44 barangays, as Iligan City remains peaceful.
