SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The number of local government units (LGUs) in the Ilocos Region earning the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) has increased to 83 in 2024, up from 70 in 2023, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 1.
Sheen Mark Pagaduan, Local Government Operations Officer (LGOO) III of the DILG 1, said that the results highlight the commitment of LGUs to transparency, accountability, and quality public service.
The SGLG, mandated under Republic Act 11292, recognizes LGUs that excel in various governance areas, including financial administration, disaster preparedness, social protection, environmental management, and local economic development.
LGUs that pass the assessment receive financial incentives to fund projects that further improve governance and service delivery.
Provincial LGUs receive P3 million each, city governments receive P2 million each, and municipal governments receive P1.153 million each. These funds are used for projects aimed at enhancing public service and community development.
Among the awardees, the provincial governments of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Pangasinan met the SGLG standards, along with the city governments of Alaminos, Batac, Candon, Laoag, San Carlos, and San Fernando.
For municipalities, Ilocos Norte had eight awardees, Ilocos Sur had 21, La Union had 17, and Pangasinan had 28.
In San Fernando City, La Union, one of the consistent SGLG awardees, officials attributed their recognition to strong governance programs.
Lily Ann Colisao, San Fernando City LGOO, emphasized the role of disaster risk reduction, social services, and youth engagement in their success.
“Our city’s strong performance in disaster risk reduction and management, social services, and youth development, [particularly through the establishment of] SK Teen Centers in every barangay, contributed to our SGLG achievement,” she said.
With the SGLG serving as a benchmark for excellence, the increase in awardees reflects the dedication of LGUs in Region 1 to sustainable development and improved service delivery, strengthening the region’s reputation as a model for good governance. (CCMT/KJCR/ESA, PIA La Union)
