Human error remains the primary culprit behind the alarming number of road accidents in Ilocos Sur.
The persistent issue, which has claimed countless lives and caused life-altering injuries, underscores the urgent need for heightened road safety awareness.
Data from the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO) reveals a disturbing trend.
According to Provincial Director PCOL Darnell Dulnuan of the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO), a combined 95.21 percent of road accidents in the first half of 2023 and 2024 were attributed to human error.
These incidents not only result in physical trauma but also inflict deep emotional scars on families and communities.
To curb this crisis, the ISPPO is intensifying its campaign for responsible driving.
The agency emphasizes the following key practices:
- Prioritize rest: Taking regular breaks, especially during long journeys, can prevent fatigue-related accidents.
- Stay focused: Avoid distractions like mobile phones while driving.
- Obey speed limits: Adhering to posted speed limits ensures safer travel conditions for everyone.
- Drive sober: Alcohol and drug impairment significantly increase the risk of accidents.
- Wear protective gear: Helmets are essential for motorcycle riders.
- Follow traffic rules: Obeying traffic signals and signs is fundamental to road safety.
- Maintain vehicle condition: Regular vehicle maintenance is crucial for preventing breakdowns and accidents.
Brigadier General Lou F. Evangelista, Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) director, underscored the importance of proactive measures.
“We are directing our police officers to establish checkpoints in accident-prone areas to reduce vehicle speeds, particularly during the rainy season,” he said during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas of the Presidential Communications Office through the Philippine Information Agency on Tuesday.
Evangelista also urged motorists to exercise patience and courtesy on the road to prevent road rage incidents.
Beyond compliance with traffic laws, responsible driving is a reflection of one’s commitment to the safety of others.
By adopting these practices, drivers can contribute to creating safer roads for everyone and ensuring a peaceful homecoming for themselves and their loved ones. (AMB/ATV/VGS, PIA Ilocos Sur)
