VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA) — In commemoration of the 128th martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, the provincial government of Ilocos Sur encouraged the youth to embrace the national hero’s legacy of service, courage, and patriotism during a ceremony held at Plaza Salcedo here on Dec. 30.
Ilocos Sur Governor Jerry Singson led the tribute, calling on the youth to embody Rizal’s vision.
“To our youth, may you continue to tread the path Rizal envisioned for our nation—undaunted, purposeful, and with a heart for service,” Singson said.
Singson also encouraged everyone to preserve Rizal’s legacy in daily life, contributing to building a Bagong Pilipinas with unity and purpose.
The event featured a 21-gun salute by the Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office (ISPPO) and a wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal’s monument, symbolizing respect and gratitude for his sacrifices.
The ceremony united local officials, agency representatives, educators, and youth leaders, underscoring the community’s collective responsibility in keeping Rizal’s ideals alive.
Camill Ruth Suyat, 2nd placer in the 62nd National Rizal Youth Leadership Institute on-the-spot painting competition held recently, added to the solemn atmosphere by sharing her reflections.
“It is important to commemorate and learn from Rizal’s teachings and dreams for our country so as part of the youth of the Philippines, I encourage my fellow youth to strive and be inspired by how Rizal lived his life, ever willing to dedicate his talent for the country,” Suyat said.
Meanwhile, Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Art Oandasan, chairperson of the Committee on Culture and the Arts and Living Treasures, emphasized the relevance of Rizal’s legacy in modern society.
“Let us do our part in this modern world to show acts of nationalism, fight for the oppressed and the marginalized,” Oandasan said.
As Ilocos Sur continues to honor its heroes, the youth are called upon to become catalysts for positive change, embodying the same dedication and love for the nation that defined Dr. Jose Rizal’s life. (CCMT/ATV, PIA Ilocos Sur)
