ILOILO CITY (PIA) — The cycling community here will try to break the world record for the largest human image of a bicycle as part of the celebration of the Iloilo Bike Festival this July 2024.
In a press conference, Architect Wilfredo Sy., director of the Bike Festival, said that more than 5,000 bikers are expected to join the event, hoping that Iloilo City would finally bag the Guinness World Record that is currently hold by the Organizing Committee of Moscow Cycling Festival and the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow with 2,620 individuals participated during their successful attempt in 2019.
“We will also want to do a dry-run prior to staging this. With that, the risks would be lesser during the actual staging and the deployment plan will be set in place. If we could unite, then I am sure we could get this one,” Sy said.
Aside from the attempt for the world record, this year’s festival also features different activities that will attract thousands of bike enthusiasts in the region. These include the Double Century Ride, Ambitious Bike Race, Cyclopedy: A Bike Exhibit, Bike Food Crawl, Kiddie Race, Tour de Iloilo, and Bisik-Litera-Tour, among others.
Iloilo City Traffic Management Unit head Uldarico Garbanzos, on the other hand, assured the public that proper traffic management will be implemented during the activity to avoid vehicular accidents and heavy traffic.
“We will be coordinating with the security and traffic management. As requested, we will be deploying personnel to support all the activities. So far with the traffic, we will be fully in charge of it,” Garbanzos said.
The Iloilo City government also pledged for continuous implementation of bike-friendly policies and infrastructure to further boost the biking community in the city and ensure the safety of the cyclists who use bikes, not just for leisure, but as mode of transportation.
“We would want the community to join us and we want to live up to the ‘Bike Capital of the Philippines’ moniker. Through the event, we can empower the bikers and the entire community,” Sy added. (AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo)
