Iloilo Esplanade wins big in 2024 Asian Townscape Awards

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – The Iloilo City River Esplanade project has been recognized for its outstanding urban landscape construction and sustainability, winning a prestigious award at the 2024 Asian Townscape Awards (ATA).

The esplanade, which opened to the public in 2012, is considered the longest promenade and linear park in the Philippines, stretching over nine kilometers along both sides of the Iloilo River. It currently comprises 13 sections connected by 11 bridges, traversing five of the city’s seven districts.

The project’s success was attributed to its harmonious integration with the regional environment, prioritizing safety, convenience, and sustainability. The ATA also recognized the project’s respect for regional culture and history, high artistic quality, contributions to local development, and potential to serve as a model for other cities.

City Planning and Development Office head Ronald Cartagena received the award in Fukuoka, Japan on November 18, 2024. The recognition further solidifies the Iloilo Esplanade’s status as a landmark achievement in urban planning and a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable development.

In a press statement, Mayor Jerry Treñas shared that this recognition is a testament to the city government’s unwavering vision and commitment in pursuit of sustainable urban development.

“This award reaffirms Iloilo City’s position as a model of sustainability and urban excellence, inspiring other cities to pursue similar initiatives. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders, past and present, who have contributed to this remarkable project,” Treñas said.

Treñas further attributed the leadership of former Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon, for being instrumental to the development of the Iloilo River and its surroundings.

To note, ATA is a brainchild of UN-HABITAT’s Regional Office for Asia and Pacific (UN-HABITAT ROAP), Asian Habitat Society (AHS), Fukuoka Asian Urban Research Center (URC), and Asia Townscape Design Society (ATDeS).

It honors cities, regions, and projects that have played a significant role as models in landscape construction. (AAL/PIA Iloilo/With reports from Iloilo City Gov’t)
