Ilonggo taxi driver returns P2.4M to owner, gets recognition for honesty

ILOILO CITY (PIA) — A taxi driver from Pavia, Iloilo has gained praise from the public, including local officials for his honesty for returning a bag containing P2.4 million in cash that his passenger, a business woman, left in the cab by accident.

Anthony Aguirre, a resident of Barangay Amparo, has gone viral on social media sites for his good deed and earned the admiration of the public, including Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, who is set to confer him with the Honorary Citizen of Iloilo City title and a reward of P20,000 cash.

“I commend him for his honesty in returning a backpack containing P2.4 million in cash. His actions reflect the integrity and compassion of Ilonggos,” Treñas also said in a statement.

On January 17, 2025, Aguirre transported the passenger from a hotel in the city to the Lapuz roll-on, roll-off wharf for her trip to Bacolod.

The following day, his taxi operator was contacted by the Iloilo City Police about the missing bag, and upon checking the vehicle, Aguirre found the bag and gave it to the authorities, with the money still intact.

Treñas added that Aguirre’s story serves as an inspiration for all Ilonggos, citing that honesty builds trust and pride in the community.

Meanwhile, the local government unit of Pavia in Iloilo province is also planning to pass a resolution, recognizing Aguirre’s integrity. (AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo)
