Infectious disease workshop boosts resilience of Metro Manila LGUs

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — A workshop aimed at mainstreaming protocols for Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases (EREID) empowered local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila to become more resilient, adaptable, and inclusive, particularly for children and individuals with disabilities.

Over 60 representatives from local disaster risk reduction and management offices, local health offices, and local planning and development coordination offices focused on creating organized responses to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and operationalizing contingency plans for public health emergencies.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government-National Capital Region (DILG-NCR) hosted the event, with resource persons from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Department of Health (DOH).

The workshop’s primary objective was to integrate EREID protocols into the LGUs’ contingency plans.

Participants engaged in discussions on creating organized responses to emerging infectious diseases and operationalizing their contingency plans for health emergencies.

The event also facilitated the sharing of best practices among different LGUs.

The contingency plan, a vital component for LGUs, serves as a backup strategy for managing worst case scenarios and unexpected situations or emergencies, effectively.

On the final day of the workshop, participants tested and simulated their updated contingency plans.

This initiative was also made possible through support from the Regional Institutional Development Support (RIDS) and the Project Governance for Resilient & Adaptive Social Protection (GRASP), highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance local capacities in addressing public health challenges.

The workshop also underscored the importance of comprehensive planning and community engagement in fostering resilience against infectious diseases. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
